As the warmth of Thanksgiving approaches, our thoughts turn to delicious meals, gratitude, and quality time with loved ones. While the feast takes center stage, it’s crucial not to overlook safety for yourself and loved ones. In preparation, we’ve crafted a Thanksgiving safety checklist to ensure your celebration is filled with joy, and free from hazards.

✓ Schedule an Electrical Inspection

Thanksgiving (and the holiday season in general) involves a lot of cooking with many additional devices that can put strain on your electrical system. To ensure that your home circuits are up for the job, consider scheduling an electrical safety inspection.

✓ Use GFCI Outlets

GFCI outlets offer protection from electric shock by monitoring the power flowing into appliances. To keep you and your family safe while preparing Thanksgiving dinner, be sure to plug any countertop appliances into GFCI outlets. Additionally, test each outlet before use; these tests should be done every three months or so.

✓ Cook with Caution

Never leave your cooking unattended, especially during Thanksgiving, when so much meal prep is being juggled. Keep pot handles turned back towards the stove to avoid bumping into them, clear the cooking area of combustible materials, and keep appliances free of crumbs or mess.

✓ Keep your Floors Clean

The chaos of the holidays can often lead to clutter on the floor, especially in kitchen and dining areas. Be sure to keep any electrical cords out of the way of foot traffic, have well-lit walkways, and stay vigilant for any food spill slipping hazards.

✓ Consider Flameless Candles

Candles are a popular Thanksgiving decoration, but their open flames can lead to fire hazards during holiday dinner. With so many people passing plates of food, it’s easy for mishaps to occur. Flameless LED candles will offer a pleasant glow to your dinner spread without the fire risk.

This holiday season, let’s feast, laugh, and make lasting memories in a safe home. Cheers to a clean and happy celebration!
