Power Outage Fridge Safety

Summer storms are brewing, which means a high chance of power outages. For homeowners, a main concern when the lights go out is the food in the fridge; perishable food can spoil fast when left without refrigeration. This is especially unfortunate while facing rising food prices, and research suggests that the frequency of power outages will only increase in the coming years.
According to climatecentral.org, Michigan is ranked as second in the country for the most power outages. This is due to a combination of Michigan’s aging power grid, and an increased chance of severe weather. The findings state that the years of 2011-2021 experienced 64% more major power outages compared to 2000-2010.
In addition to the outage frequency, WXYZ reports that Michigan has some of the lengthiest overall power outages nationwide. This means that there are longer stretches of time that your fridge may remain without power, which spells disaster for groceries.
As a rule of thumb, your fridge will keep food safe for 4 hours when the power goes out, while freezer foods last around 24 hours. Foodsafety.gov provides a comprehensive list of foods to stay aware of.
The best offense for power outages is a strong defense.
